To use AI or not to use AI.

At this point it’s looking more and more like that’s not the question that you should be asking, the question is how to use it without loosing your ability to think and function without it.

Generally speaking I prefer to learn skills directly and to do as much as I can without the aid of tools that replace or reduce my proficiency in whatever it is that I’m trying to do. In some cases yo have to have a tool in place to do things, after all you can’t play tennis without a tennis racket. The difference there is that the racket can’t play the game without you wielding it.

I could have some AI plugin start writing things here. I don’t know how well it would do compared to what I’m coming up with on my own, and I’m sure that it would be something that would eventually be called out. However by spending the time writing here I keep my own skills developing and as I get better and better at what write that’s going to be reflected in anything that I’m doing. Either here or at work.

I’m already seeing some people who are seemingly feed everything through some type of AI service that they use. Every email, every document, every decision seems to have to be stepped through ChatGPT, or whatever the tools of the day are. And honestly I don’t like it.

It’s not because it makes things every email that is sent sound like it’s written by the same person behind the keyboard.

I don’t have a problem with using these tools, but I really don’t want them speaking for me, or preventing me from being able to operate without them. Using them to automate simple repetitive tasks, that’s great. Using them to think for me….

Thanks, but no.
