It’s been a long while since I’ve had to move personally. I got lucky enough to get into the housing market at a point where it wasn’t insane and have been luck enough to be able to maintain housing.
I do have a number of friends however who have moved from time to time and what I’ve seen is that as we get older the stuff we have becomes more and more difficult to move. Some of it’s just the volume of crap that we have sitting around, and some of it’s the nature of the crap that we have sitting around.
First off, volume of crap.
When I moved into my current place we fit everything into a single 15ft moving truck. It was pretty full but we didn’t Tetris the hell out of it and pretty much everything moved in a single run. Looking around where I’m at now there’s no way in hell that would be the case. Hell I have a pickup truck load full of stamps alone.
And no. I don’t collect stamps that’s leftovers from an estate.
Every so often I go through and purge out stuff. Old computers, parts, even books and other things that I really have no use or attachment to any longer, and it’s still piling up. Having had to deal with multiple parents passing and their associated stuff collected over their lives I think that I realize that there’s not a lot of point in just piling more and more stuff into the home since at the end of the day someone just has to deal with cleaning up and disposing of the stuff.
The other thing is the nature of the stuff that we have collected over the years. Some is just big enough that there’s no chance in hell it’s going to leave this house. There’s several pieces of furniture here that are effectively large enough that getting them in here was enough of an ordeal that I’m not going to be pulling them out of here.
Not in one piece anyhow.
And it’s not like everything in here has value to people. We had a treadmill here that sat on a local marketplace for free for months before someone finally came down to collect the dammed thing.
Anyhow thoughts about this popped into my head when a good friend let me know that he was going to be moving in a couple of months. Immediately my head flipped over to thinking that I would need to make sure that weekend was free since I’ve got a truck, and my back isn’t a complete shit show at this point. And in the back of my head I was kind of hoping that he would be picking up movers since moving other peoples stuff is a little nerve wracking.
Last thing I want to be is responsible for a TV getting dropped or broken in transit. Aside from not wanting to replace something I would feel horrible if something slipped and caused damage, or was damaged.
Thankfully he’s getting movers to take care of the move. So I’m guessing that the only thing I might have to do is help with some of the really awkward stuff that needs to be shifted because, yep, I’m the dude with a truck. That should however be fairly limited, or light stuff, so I guess my back survives for another day.
Anyhow, I guess that I’ll be looking around here for another purge. Between old monitors, extra tools, and DVD’s that are sitting around I think that there could be a truckload of stuff that needs to go.
Although given what’s been going on with digital subscriptions and not owning anyhting keeping those DVD’s around might not be a stupid idea.
